What kind of English do you speak?

Well since everyone else seems to be doing it, I figured I would too. I'm still trying to figure out how they got the 5% Dixie.

Your Linguistic Profile:
55% Yankee
30% General American English
10% Upper Midwestern
5% Dixie
0% Midwestern
What Kind of American English Do You Speak?

So what did you get?

Very interesting. I don't know how accurate it is though. Here are my results:
45% General American English
35% Yankee
15% Dixie

Considering the fact that I was born and raised on Long Island, went to college in Pennsylvania and have worked in the City for 20 some-odd years I wonder where the 15 percent Dixie came from? I guess I've read and watched GONE WITH THE WIND too many times.

Wow, 15% Dixie. Do you have family with southern connections? It doesn't take too many answers to add up those points. I'm wondering if there are a few words that have made it into your vocabulary from family members. Then again with tv we are all getting a bit homogenized in our language. I grew up saying tonic instead of soda, but I don't think that's as common around Boston as it used to be.

This is strange. The Dixie influence crops up in many linguistic profiles. I think it's part of a vast Southern conspiracy. Y'all with me?

Well since I was born in Boston and live in NYC I'm leaning toward your point of view. Either that or its a glitch in the programming. I kept trying to see what question I answered in such a way as to give me 5% but gave up before getting an answer.

Well, I do have family in Virginia now, But they have only been down there for 10 years. I do go to visit. Then back in the late 80s I used to go to Tennessee twice a year for work. Maybe the southern influence come from those. I don't see how occasional visits to the South can make that much difference. I guess little 'ol me is just a Southern Belle at heart.

75% General American English
10% Upper Midwestern
5% Dixie
5% Midwestern
5% Yankee --

Surprising. The Dixie score I understand since we lived in the Deep South for eighteen years.. and I speak much slower and distinctly than I used to. A little surprised that's not higher. I've a tendency to very easily pick up accents and adapt to speech patterns wherever I am, even whilst on holiday. BUT I'm definitely a Chicago woman thru and thru.. and sound that way.. at least I think I do :)

Hey, y'all. Meet'cha in the gangway and we'll drink pop. See?
